SO, what even is a "Niche?"
Well, by definition, it is a unique and specific subgenre or segment of a market that a business will specify their work towards a particular group of customers. This idea of picking a Niche can be beneficial to a Photographer, but really, how important is it? I am going to discuss the pros, cons, and IF I personally were to pick a niche, who would I want to be working with and why?
The "Pros"
There really is some good pros to picking a Niche and sticking with it. I will be talking about these from both personal and business perspectives.
Some that I can think of include:
- Being able to shoot more of your personal aesthetic
- working with folks you can relate to in your personal life and interests, not just as a service provider
- Creates a super cohesive body of work, only adding to your ability to book more work like it
- If you're a Woman, or Queer, or a person of colour, or if you fall into a particular style or subculture (Punk, Gothic, Traditional, Earthy, Whimsical, Luxury, etc.), you can target your business, advertising, and work towards a specific group or groups of people like you!
- Picking a Niche that you personally like = Specialized, Creative, Unique work for your clients!
I totally see that some of those blend with one another, however that is what is good about picking your Niche! You can really hone in your style of work and merge it more with your personal lifestyles and even things like fashion choices or music tastes! You can get super creative and cool with your work and find people who will let you be your creative self while getting amazing keepsakes to pass on for generations to come!
The "Cons"
As much as there are many pros to picking a niche, there are also a few cons.
Here are a few:
- Limiting clientele and booking opportunities, especially when you first narrow down your Niche
- missing out on potentially beautiful, fun, and fulfilling work for both you, the Photographer, and the Client
- Sometimes, someone may really love your work but don't match your specific aesthetics, and that can be a tough scenario to choose to turn down the work
- if you chose to niche down your work, so for example, just doing weddings, or just doing sports, or just doing portraits, you can miss out on a lot of unique experiences as apposed to working in a few areas of photography as a whole!
There are so many areas of Photography to get work in. While I personally prioritize working with Couples and Women, I try not to limit myself when it comes to areas of work. In terms of picking a Niche WITHIN your chosen area of Photography, that can be limiting, but also rewarding if you're able to stick with it.
What would I choose?
Now I am not sure if this could be considered selfish, but what I am attempting to do is a bit of both. Taking things that align with my business goals and artistic goals, and putting them to use. What would I like from each choice?
While I would love to create a cohesive body of work, I love editing and shooting uniquely for each shoot I work. It is my policy to celebrate each couples UNIQUE and special love, and showcase, memorialize, and deliver work that is both consistent with my style AND showcases your unique personalities and experiences as a couple.
I myself am a Female, Queer, and Alternative creator and I LOVE working with other folks like me! BUT, I believe all love is equal and no matter who you are, alternative or traditional, Queer or not, no matter where you're from, you deserve to be celebrated and captured in YOUR way! And I love to do that.
My passion is love! Love for yourself, for your sport, for each-other. I want to celebrate that with you.
